History of Button-Down shirts :
Buttons on the collar, known as "button-down", have their origin in the world of sport, specifically in British polo in the nineteenth century. Players complained that their shirts 's necks would rise in the wind while riding, which was annoying and unstreamlined. To fix this, they began to button the ends of the collar to the shirt, and this iconic design was born.
In 1896, John Brooks, grandson of founder Henry S. Brooks, attended a polo match in England and observed players holding their necks to prevent them from flailing in the wind. Inspired by this idea, John brought it to the United States and thus started the fashion revolution: a button-down collar shirt that is replicated all over the world today.
The invention of the Original Polo Button-Down shirt in 1900 marked a milestone in the history of fashion. Before, collars were rigid and standard size, they had to be sewn separately to the body of the garment.
They are still very much in force, as they keep the collar in place, especially when worn without a tie, preventing it from lifting or shifting.
